Cybersecurity Newsletter #4: Travel Smart, Stay Secure and Cybersecurity Tips for the Company Outing
June 2026 Cybersecurity Update | ODVI DTT – DTT IT Department
Hello Team!
This month, our company outing is coming up! The bags are packed, the vibe is ready — but don't forget to pack your cybersecurity mindset too! As you travel to your destination, here are some important tips to keep our devices and data safe, so we can all enjoy the trip worry-free and bring home nothing but great memories!
Did You Know?
60% of data breaches happen while traveling — and most travelers don't even realize they're at risk!
Topic 1: The Dangers of Public Wi-Fi
Why it matters: Public networks have no encryption — anyone nearby can see what you're doing and steal your passwords or data.
Free Wi-Fi is convenient, but it's often unsecured. Hackers can intercept your data, steal passwords, or inject malware onto your device — all without you knowing.
How to Stay Safe:
- Use your mobile data — this is the safest option when traveling
- Turn off auto-connect — prevent your device from joining unknown networks automatically
- Verify the network name — ask staff for the correct Wi-Fi name before connecting
Topic 2: Juice Jacking — Don't Trust Free USB Ports
Why it matters: USB ports can carry both power and data — attackers can install malware without you knowing.
Those convenient USB charging stations at airports, hotels, or cafes? Some have been compromised. Hacker can install malware or steal your data through the USB port — this is called "juice jacking."
How to Stay Safe:
- Bring your own charger and cable — plug into a wall outlet, not a USB port
- Use a "USB data blocker" — a small device that allows charging only, blocking data transfer
- Charge before you travel — ensure your battery is full before heading to the airport
Topic 3: Physical Device Safety
Why it matters: A stolen device means exposed data, potential breaches, and expensive replacements.
When traveling, your devices are more vulnerable to theft or casual snooping. Someone looking over your shoulder at a café, a briefly unattended laptop, or leaving your phone on the table — these small mistakes can lead to big problems.
How to Stay Safe:
- Keep devices with you — never leave them unattended, even briefly
- Use a hotel safe — store devices securely when not in use
- Enable "Find My Device" — so you can locate or remotely wipe a lost device
- Screen lock is ON — always lock your screen before stepping away
- Avoid shoulder surfing — be aware of who might be watching your screen
Reminder: Lock Your Computer
Still the same rule applies — lock your screen before you walk away from your desk or anywhere!
