Cybersecurity Newsletter #3 Keep Work Devices for Work: Protecting ODVI from Personal-Use Risks

May 2026 Cybersecurity Update | ODVI DTT – DTT IT Department

Hello Team!

As we continue to strengthen our digital workspace at ODVI, this month we are addressing a critical risk: the danger of using company-issued laptops as personal devices.

The Danger Zone: Personal Use

We have noticed that some still use their work laptops for personal streaming, gaming, or downloading apps because current settings allow you to install software and change system configurations. This "freedom" is actually a major security vulnerability for ODVI:

  • Malware Gateway: Personal software and "free" games often contain hidden spyware. Downloading these gives hackers a direct path into our network.
  • Weakened Defenses: Changing settings to make personal apps work often disables critical security tools designed to protect our data.
  • Privacy Risk: Using personal accounts on work hardware blends your private data with company data, making both susceptible to credential theft.
🚨 Real-World Incident: The $2 Million Roblox Hack

Recently, the tech company Vercel suffered a devastating $2 million security breach. The root cause? A seemingly harmless Roblox cheat download installed on a company device. The "free cheat" actually contained hidden malware that harvested saved passwords and session cookies, granting hackers direct access to Vercel's corporate network. This catastrophic financial loss is exactly why personal gaming and unauthorized downloads are strictly prohibited on ODVI hardware.
